Yian Shen

Yian Shen is a classically trained flutist from China. She is a remarkable soloist and an extraordinary improvisor. Her playing carries the magic of music that inspires and curls people from their innermost being.

​

As a soloist, Yian is recognized for her bright and powerful sound. Her belief of music performing is “Confidence, Communication, and Clarity”. She received her bachelor’s degree from the Boston Conservatory, primarily studying with Ann Bobo, and her master’s degree from Arizona State University, with Dr. Elizabeth Buck. Her solo recitals covered diverse styles, including works by Niccolò Paganini, Eugène Bozza, Carl Nielsen, André Jolivet, among others.

As a chamber player, she has worked with many other instruments. Her woodwind quartet was selected to play in the Villa-Lobos Festival in 2019. As an improvisor, Yian is devoted to propagating the expression power of music. She improvises with appealing timbres and extended techniques. She performed in the improvisation concert at the Boston Conservatory in 2018. As an ensemble player, she has been a member of the ASU Symphony Orchestra, Contemporary Music Ensemble, Chamber Winds, and Wind Ensemble. Back in Boston, she was a regular member of the Boston Conservatory Symphony Orchestra and Wind Ensemble.
